Keeping Your Site Safe

Can you keep your site safe from hackers? Are hackers even real people? 
In most cases, no. If your site gets hacked or infected with malware, it was not by design.
There are programs that run around on the web trying to hack websites for the pure chaos they can cause by disrupting businesses in the USA. Expect that if you have a website, you will be infected at some point.
What can you do proactively?
  • Back up your website regularly (ex. GoDaddy offers the service for $2/month). You can use a variety of free plugins and email yourself a back up or push to DropBox so you always have a clean copy handy to overwrite an infected site.
  • Put an SSL on your site – The more secure your site is, the less likely you are to get infected. SSLs cost $50-$110 a year for a single domain, depending on your registrar or host.
  • Consider buying site lock or site security from your hosting provider (Site security on GoDaddy is $5/month)
  • If you have a wordpress site:
    • Update your website plugins regularly
    • Use at least a medium if not strong password
    • Install site security (WordFence is free)
    • Remove spam comments
    • Remove any “Admin” named users (they are the most likely to be hacked)
    • Remove any extraneous Themes or unused plugins.
